In the not-so-distant future, Earth has become uninhabitable, prompting a mass exodus to Mars aboard the colossal spaceship 'Aniara'. Among the passengers are those who have chosen to live their final days in consumption and decadence, ignoring the ship's mysterious malfunctions. After a catastrophic collision knocks Aniara off course, the settlers realize that they are adrift in space with no hope of reaching Mars or returning to Earth. As they grapple with this harsh reality, the passengers must confront their place in the universe and the emptiness of their previous lives.

Set against a dystopian backdrop where humanity has exhausted its home planet, 'Aniara' is a Swedish-Danish science fiction drama that explores themes of existential dread, human nature, and the consequences of unchecked consumption. Based on Swedish poet Harry Martinson's epic space poem of the same name, the film is directed by Hugo Lilja and Pella Kagerman (collectively known as Pella Kågerman). Co-written with Mattias Olsson, 'Aniara' presents a chilling vision of humanity's potential future, where the pursuit of pleasure and decadence leads to spiritual emptiness and despair.
