Penfield Gruber, once a renowned scientist, now finds himself managing a seedy hotel due to circumstances unknown. He keeps tabs on his tenants out of idle curiosity until he's approached by unknown underworld figures. They task him with surveilling a suspected double-crosser living in the hotel.
