Set in a dystopian future, 'The Handmaid's Tale' follows June Osborne (renamed Offred), who lives under the totalitarian regime of Gilead, formerly part of the United States. In this religious autocracy, women are stripped of their rights and forced into specific roles based on their perceived fertility.
