Hotel Splendide, located on a remote island accessible only once a month by ferry, was founded by the late Dame Blanche as a decaying resort and health spa. Her grown children now run the hotel according to her specific instructions, offering ghastly seaweed and fish-based food, and unconventional treatments such as enema therapies. Kath, the former sous chef at the hotel, receives an anonymous letter informing her of Dame Blanche's death. She returns to the island with the intention of helping her estranged brother run the hotel, hoping to reconcile their relationship in the process.
