Thirteen years after World War II, concentration camp survivor Lucia (Charlotte Rampling) arrives at a Vienna hotel where she encounters Max (Dirk Bogarde), who had been her tormentor during the war and is now employed as the night porter. Despite the circumstances of their past, they rekindle an intense, sado-masochistic relationship.
