Le jour se lève begins with François, a factory worker, barricading himself inside his room after committing murder. As police surround him, he reflects on the events leading up to this point. François meets and falls in love with Françoise, a young florist. However, Valentin, a manipulative dog trainer who is also interested in Françoise, manipulates her into leaving François.
