In Geneva, bookseller and publisher Axel Thorpe encounters Sibylle Ashby, a rebellious 16-year-old from a wealthy family, shoplifting in his store. He challenges her to write a book as compensation for her actions. Sibylle pens an erotic novel which Axel publishes anonymously; it becomes a bestseller. Meanwhile, Sibylle develops feelings for the older Axel, but he becomes involved with her elder sister instead. Sibylle must decide whether to seek revenge or try to rekindle his affections. Their relationship is complicated by Sibylle's strained relationships with her family members and Axel's unresolved grief over the death of his mother.
