Clément, a young Parisian philosophy professor, is temporarily transferred to Arras, a small provincial town for a year. He struggles to find ways to occupy his free time until he meets Jennifer, a pretty hairdresser with whom he begins an affair. Despite their mutual attraction, their relationship is threatened by socio-cultural differences: Clément is a snobbish loner obsessed with Kant and Proust, while Jennifer is a sweet young mother who enjoys karaoke evenings with her friends and popular novels. Clément lives in the moment, whereas Jennifer plans for their future together. Their contrasting lifestyles create tension between them.
