Story

Hugo Weaving stars as Daniel Fisher, a renowned photojournalist who returns home to Australia after an assignment in Africa, struggling with shell shock on the eve of becoming a father. Meanwhile, South Sudanese refugee Sebastian Aman (Andrew Luri), now living happily in Australia with his family, learns that Daniel's upcoming retrospective exhibition might display photographs of a massacre from his village 15 years ago. Sebastian tracks down Daniel and appeals to him not to include those photos. An unlikely friendship develops between the two men as they bond over their shared trauma. However, their relationship is tested when Daniel makes a shocking discovery related to the photographs.

Summary

Hearts and Bones (2019), directed by Ben Lawrence, tells the story of an intricate friendship between a shell-shocked war photographer and a Sudanese refugee living in Australia. The film explores themes of trauma, guilt, responsibility, and redemption as these two men from vastly different backgrounds connect over their shared experiences of loss and violence. Hugo Weaving delivers a powerful performance as Daniel Fisher, while Andrew Luri, who had no acting experience prior to this role, holds his own as Sebastian Aman. The narrative centers around the relationship between these two characters and how it is shaped by their pasts and the photograph that threatens to destroy them both.
