In the Khabarovsk region of Russia, senior ranger and bear hunter Pavel Likhovtsev keeps an apiary in the taiga and raises his eldest son Zhenya as a peasant. However, with the onset of the nineties, their peaceful life is disrupted when the apiary goes bust, forcing the family to relocate to Khabarovsk in search of better opportunities.
