Jacoba Francisca Maria Smulders, known professionally as Cobie Smulders, was born on April 3, 1982, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Raised primarily in White Rock, she was named Jacoba after her great-aunt, from whom she also inherited her nickname "Cobie".
Growing up with a Dutch father and an English mother, Smulders initially aspired to become a marine biologist before discovering her passion for acting during high school. Her early career began in modeling, a profession that allowed her to travel the world but one she eventually left to pursue her true calling in film and television. She rose to international stardom through her nine-season portrayal of the witty news anchor Robin Scherbatsky on the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother.
Smulders further solidified her place in pop culture by joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill, a role she has reprised across numerous blockbuster films and series. Beyond her on-screen success, she is known for her resilience, having navigated a private battle with ovarian cancer early in her career.
