Born as Thea Akasa Gumbert on January 31, 1986, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, the actress began her career with notable roles in Australian television and film. She attended North Sydney Girls' High School, where she was a classmate of fellow actress Nathalie Kelley.
Gumbert is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Mary Hegarty in the 2003 cinematic dramatization of the legendary bushranger's life, Ned Kelly. Beyond this performance, her television credits include a recurring role as Jemma MacKinnon in the long-running soap opera Home and Away in 2002, as well as appearing as Katey in the mini-series Marking Time in 2003. In her personal life, she married Joeseph Slade in October 2005.
