Born in Madrid on June 16, 1983, Verónica Echegui (Verónica Fernández Echegaray) was a highly celebrated Spanish actress and director known for her immense versatility and emotional depth. She rose to prominence in 2006 with her breakout role in Bigas Luna’s "Yo soy la Juani" (My Name is Juani), which earned her the first of several Goya Award nominations. Trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, she successfully transitioned to international projects, appearing in the British thriller "Fortitude" and the Hollywood action film "The Cold Light of Day" alongside Henry Cavill.
In her later career, Echegui expanded her artistry into directing; her debut short film, "Tótem Loba", won the Goya Award for Best Fiction Short Film in 2022. Her final television performances included leading roles in the Netflix drama "Intimacy" and the 2025 Apple TV+ series "Love You to Death". Tragically, Echegui passed away on August 24, 2025, at the age of 42 following a private battle with cancer, leaving behind a profound legacy as one of the most talented figures in contemporary Spanish cinema.
