Viola Schweizer is a German actress born on September 18, 1954, in East Berlin, German Democratic Republic. Before achieving success as an actress, Schweizer worked in various professions, including as a chemical worker and as a seamstress and dresser at the Komische Oper Berlin. After being repeatedly rejected by acting schools, she taught herself to act and began her career with small roles at the Komische Oper. She made her breakthrough in television in 1978 with her first leading role as Gitta, a laboratory assistant, in the film Über sieben Brücken mußt du gehn. In 1980, she took on a larger role in the film Alle meine Mädchen, portraying Kerstin, an intelligent but unconventional worker. Her career includes a variety of films and TV series in East Germany and later in reunified Germany, such as Spreewaldfamilie (1990) and the TV movie Der Handymörder (1998). She is also known for her work in the crime series Tatort.
