In the dystopian future of Seattle after 'The Pulse' event, genetically engineered super-soldier Max Guevara escapes from a military facility as a child. Years later, she lives off-grid to avoid government agents who want her back. Max discovers others like her, known as 'the X5s,' and searches for them while trying to evade capture. She encounters Logan Cale, an idealistic cyber-journalist fighting repression.
